Wyse Helps Green, Ohio School District Save Taxpayer Money

Hardware and Infrastructure Software Provide Cost Effective Thin Computing Solutions

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing technology, today announced a partnership with Green Local School District, a suburban district outside of Akron, Ohio.  Green Local is saving thousands of dollars by selecting a thin client architecture to deliver office productivity and multimedia computing services to the district's 4250 students, teachers and administrators.  Superintendent David M. Macali is very excited about the possibilities that can grow from this partnership.

"The evolution of technology continues to accelerate and as a district we are committed to preparing our students for the future," Macali said. "Our partnership with Wyse will allow us to achieve a balance between modern technology and fiscal responsibility."

"About three years ago, we had a growing number of aging PCs that needed to be replaced and so many support requests that our six person team was constantly overwhelmed," said Jeff Doland, Director of Technology, Green Local School District.  "We also realized the financial realities of educational funding and partnered with Wyse to design a progressive and cost-effective networking solution that has been constructed to meet educational and administrative needs.  By switching to thin client computing, we can inexpensively replace outdated machines and support more clients with a smaller IT staff, resulting in cost savings for the district."

Green Local School District anticipates a savings of over $135,000 by equipping its new primary school with Wyse thin clients.  The district also replaced a lab of 35 PCs with Wyse thin clients for just a fraction of the cost of new PCs.  The return on that investment will continue to increase due to the low administration costs of thin client architectures. In all, over half of the district's approximately 1,300 desktops are currently Wyse thin clients with the goal of 100-percent adoption over time. "As aging PCs fail, they will be replaced with thin-clients," Doland said.

Green Local School District's thin client architecture utilizes the Windows server and operating systems.  Programs, files and utilities are stored on and accessed via connection to secure district servers, not local machines. As a result, students and teachers have access to all programs and appropriate web content at every workstation in the school.

This architecture, designed to standardize district-wide applications, also prevents students from downloading and/or installing non-approved software, malicious viruses or worms.  Green Local also utilizes Wyse thin clients which support built-in sound cards that help deploy multimedia educational applications for students.

"Thin computing offers end users the same desktop interfaces they know and understand while giving administrators the ability to manage thousands of desktops with little effort and at low cost," said Tarkan Maner, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Business Development, Wyse Technology.  "We are proud to give IT professionals like Jeff Doland and the Green Local School District the tools they need to serve their communities and save dollars."
