Wyse Technology Delivers Energy Saving Thin-Client Solution for Crocker Nuclear Laboratory at UC Davis

Wyse's Secure, Managed Thin Clients Expected To Decrease Operating Costs, Ease Deployment And Centralize Administration

San Jose, CA – 2001/12/10 - As part of an effort to help the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory (CNL) lower energy expenditures, reduce overall operating costs and replace out-dated PCs, Wyse® Technology, today announced the implementation of Wyse's Winterm™ thin clients in the CNL facility on the University of California, Davis campus. CNL has attached specific research devices such as microbalances, temperature gauges, spectrophotometers and air sampler controller cards to the Wyse secure, managed thin clients, replacing PCs that had to be replaced frequently. With the thin-client deployment, CNL has been able to improve the security and integrity of information while lowering energy consumption and IT costs.

The Crocker Nuclear Laboratory is one of several Organized Research Units (ORUs) on the UC-Davis campus. CNL, which houses a nuclear particle accelerator, is capable of consuming more than 7 percent of total campus power. Following the deployment of the Wyse Winterm thin clients, which were delivered by Capital Network Solutions of Sacramento, CNL was able to reduce its peak power consumption by more than 20 kilowatts.

Commitment to Research and Energy Savings

Wyse Winterm thin clients are desktop devices that run popular Windows applications from central servers and display the applications on a monitor. They use energy-efficient National Semiconductor Geode™ processors and have no internal moving parts such as fans or disk drives. A Wyse thin-client with an integrated 15-inch monitor uses only 25 watts of power, whereas a desktop PC with 17-inch monitor uses 171 watts of power - a savings of 146 watts, which when multiplied in California by the hundreds of thousands of PCs in use in the state, can translate into hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings."Wyse Technology has a long-standing tradition of helping the education and research communities maximize their IT dollars through innovative, effective and easy-to-use thin-client solutions," said George Skaff, vice president of worldwide marketing for Wyse Technology. Secure, Managed Thin Clients

Wyse's secure, managed thin clients help maximize IT budgets while minimizing the risk of unauthorized access to mission-critical information. Winterm thin clients deliver the key elements of security - authorization, authentication, integrity and confidentiality - through four levels of security. This includes a first-level user-name and password security shield built directly into the thin client, protecting the server from unauthorized access, support for smart cards as a form of two-factor authentication and support for biometric authentication devices (three-factor) that verify the thumbprint of the user when access to the system is desired, the use of Citrix's Secure ICA protocol, providing up to 128-bit end-to-end encryption of an ICA data-stream, and the elimination of local storage that can be hacked or fail, causing important communication like e-mail to be corrupted, modified or simply not to be received.
